Important: Following proper etiquette ensures a pleasant experience for everyone and shows respect for Japanese culture.
Before Entering the Bath
1. Wash Thoroughly
Before entering any bath, wash your entire body at the washing stations. Use soap and rinse completely. The onsen water is shared by all bathers.
2. No Swimwear
Traditional onsen require complete nudity. Swimsuits are not allowed as they can contaminate the water. This applies to everyone equally.
3. Towel Etiquette
Your small towel (tenugui) should never enter the bath water. Most bathers fold it and place it on their head while soaking.
In the Bath
4. Enter Slowly
Hot spring water can be very hot (40-44ยฐC). Enter slowly, starting with your feet, to let your body adjust. Never jump in.
5. No Swimming
Onsen are for relaxation, not recreation. Keep movements minimal and voices low. The atmosphere should be peaceful.
6. Hair Control
Long hair should be tied up to prevent it from floating in the water. Keep all hair above the waterline.
General Etiquette
7. Tattoo Policies
Many traditional onsen prohibit visible tattoos due to historical associations. Some modern facilities are becoming more accepting. Check policies before visiting, or consider private baths (kashikiri-buro).
8. Alcohol and Bathing
Avoid bathing while intoxicated. Hot water combined with alcohol can cause dizziness, fainting, or heart problems. Sake is traditionally enjoyed after bathing, not before.
9. Health Considerations
Those with high blood pressure, heart conditions, or who are pregnant should consult a doctor before using onsen. Stay hydrated and limit time in very hot waters.
10. Respect the Silence
While quiet conversation is acceptable, onsen are places of peaceful contemplation. Avoid loud talking, and never use phones or cameras in bathing areas.
After Bathing
Many onsen-goers prefer not to shower after bathing to let the mineral-rich water remain on their skin. Dry off well before returning to the changing room to keep floors dry. Hydrate with water or tea, and rest before engaging in strenuous activities.
Following these guidelines ensures an authentic and respectful onsen experience that you will treasure forever.
